Many people question whether or not fluoride is safe. Excess fluoride can cause defects in the tooth’s enamel, a condition called fluorosis. This can occur while teeth are developing, usually in children under 6 years old. This normally happens with naturally occurring fluoride found it drinking water. Cities that add fluoride to the water do so under strict guidelines to ensure safe quantities. However, if you use well water and are uncertain about the mineral content, a sample can be tested.
Proper amounts of fluoride help to strengthen teeth and prevent decay. Since Pocatello does not add fluoride to the water, it’s important to brush with a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride rinses, such as ACT, are also recommended to help strengthen teeth and prevent cavities. For children and teens, fluoride treatments are also recommended after each dental cleaning. These are all safe quantities and will not have any adverse effects on your teeth or health in general. Talk to your dentist or hygienist if you have additional questions about the benefits and safety of fluoride use.
